CLASSROOM TEACHERS

I. ROLE TECHNOLOGY SHOULD PLAY IN TEACHING/LEARNING IN YOUR DISTRICT

- Technology should supplement and complement the traditional curriculum.

- Technology should be used to create an engaging environment for students.

- Technology is a useful, necessary and basic instructional tool.

II. IMPLICATIONS UPON BUDGET

- Monies need to be directed/set aside for equipment, tech support and teacher training.

- Budget increase would be necessary, this is one of the largest obstacles to success of technology integration.

III. IMPLICATIONS OF PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

- Professional development has traditionally been geered towards hardware workings and computer processes vs. teacher education of

applications of new software and programs their students can use immediately.

- Teachers don't want to learn how to troublshoot their computers, they want to have support staff to do this.

-In-service programs typically tend to be software application based rather than curriculum based. (Gilmore, 1995)

- Most districts are lacking in professional development in this area.

- When will our district provide the time and opportunity for this professional development? This will take away from teacher classroom time.

IV. IMPLICATIONS ON CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS

- All classrooms should have access to technology-based tools.

-Teachers are expected to have a general foundation of computer knowledge upon entering their classroom.

- If teacher "technical expectations" are reduced, they are more likely to incorporate the use of technology in their classroom.

- Teachers have trouble finding time to integrate technology into the curriculum.

- Student/Teacher ratios are important to successful use of technology.

V. IMPLICATIONS ON STUDENT LEARNING STANDARDS

-Technology can enhance student understanding of core curriculum by exposing them to alternative media.

-Technology fosters an interactive atmosphere where students are positively engaged.

- Technology enables students to access the curriculum at their individual pace and comfort level.

- Technology offers TRUE differentiated instruction.

Stages of Instructional Evolution in Technology-Rich Classrooms:

1. Entry - learning the basics
2. Adoption - successfully USING the basic technology
3. Adaptation - move from basic to more frequent and purposeful use
4. Appropriation - effortlessly use as a tool to accomplish instructional and management goals
5. Invention - technology is a flexible tool, used for collaboration, interaction and customized learning.
